Joy was born and raised in North Carolina and graduated magna cum laude from East Carolina University, where she studied Environmental Science and Communication, overcoming the challenges of dyslexia along the way. Her love for adventure sports eventually pulled her west to Wyoming, where she dove headfirst into outdoor education.
Once in the Mountain West, Joy quickly realized she’d found her calling in the mountains. She became a NOLS Field Instructor in 2018 and has since led more than 60 weeks of wilderness expeditions across Alaska and the Lower 48. Whether teaching students how to cross glaciers on Alaska’s Matanuska or guiding backcountry ski tours for older adults, Joy brings expertise in mountaineering, skiing, and rock climbing to learners of all ages. Her deep love of horses and working with kids fuels her mission to make the outdoors more inclusive, especially for underrepresented communities.
Joy is also the founder of RecPak, a performance meal brand for backcountry missions, and holds certifications as a Wilderness First Responder and avalanche instructor. Now based in Wyoming, she continues to advocate for conservation and develop the next generation of outdoor leaders.
